Police Liaison Groups (PLGs) were established on Wokingham Police Sector in Spring 1999 in an attempt to engage members of the public in a more meaningful method of public consultation.
Eight groups or teams have now been established within the sector, each broadly representing the local community in which they live or work. They now successfully manage their own public meetings and by doing so facilitate public consultation as well as help identify matters of concern to the local community.
The process is not just about police informing the local community what they are, or are not doing and why, but also about identifying the issues that spoil the quality of life of those affected. It aims to encourage individuals to become part of the solution by working with police to identify the true cause of the problem and not just the symptoms it produces.
In the last year, more than 900 local residents have attended meetings held in different locations around Wokingham District. Local police officers provide information with regard to crime and disorder issues affecting the community as well as explaining police procedures and policies. Members of public are invited to join in debate about police related issues that concern them, including the delivery of police service within their area. Whenever possible, speakers are arranged to provide an insight into a topical subject, to date these have included presentations relating to Restorative Justice, Community Safety, the Crown Prosecution Service, the Magistrates Court system as well as Crime Prevention. Future speakers will be arranged in response to preferences indicated by those attending the meetings.
